ABOUT US

Tilbury Garden Design is a boutique studio creating personal and site-sensitive outdoor spaces. Our gardens reflect the spirit of their owners, respond to the architecture around them and draw from the land they grow on. We design gardens to live in and return to.

Spending time in green spaces supports our physical and mental health – and gardens are the easiest opportunity to do that. We design with that in mind, softening boundaries between inside and out so that the garden becomes part of everyday life.

The most beautiful gardens are those that seem to belong. Our planting approach favours Australian natives complemented by exotic species, all chosen for their ornamental character, seasonal interest and their ecological value to the environments around them. We also pay attention to the materials we use. Where possible, we advise sourcing materials and plants locally – borrowing from the surrounding landscape and supporting local craftspeople and suppliers, to deepen a garden’s connection to place.

VICTORIA TILBURY

Director and Principal Landscape Designer

Victoria’s design practice is shaped by two principles: ecological sensitivity and human experience. Victoria works extensively with Australian native species — chosen both for their ornamental beauty and their ability to support pollinators and local fauna — and takes care to understand how each garden will actually be lived in. She spends time understanding what her clients want from their garden, and those conversations shape everything, from the placement of a path to the spot where the pot of mint goes.

Victoria’s first career was in web design and communications — work that gave her a deep grounding in human-centred design and an eye for how people move through and experience spaces. She always loved gardening and spending time outdoors, but the COVID pandemic gave her a new appreciation for how important green spaces are for our wellbeing. She began to formalise her horticultural knowledge, studying garden design at the University of Sydney and the Australian Correspondence School before spending several years working in the landscaping industry.
